In the frame of EU Raw Materials Week 2020, the European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) held a series of three short webinars to showcase some of the most prominent ongoing activities and initiatives within the EU raw materials research and innovation community. In the drive for ever more advanced applied research and innovation and higher technology readiness levels required for a move towards climate neutrality, basic research should not be left behind as the foundation for major breakthrough discoveries. These webinars demonstrated the current landscape of raw materials research across the EU and discussed new ideas being developed among core researchers to help a critical industry adapt towards a greener and more environmentally conscious society.
All presentations are available to download in the following webinar descriptions.
Webinar 1: Monday 16th November 2020 | 11:30-13:00 (CET)
Finding sustainability throughout the raw materials value chain
Sustainability is at the heart of many innovations being developed within the raw materials sector, whether it be sustainable sourcing, sustainable supply chains, or more sustainable practices in production and processing. This session heard from a number of projects focussed on sustainability issues within the sector and how industry is implementing changes in response to the European Green Deal.

Webinar 2: Tuesday 17th November 2020 | 15:00-16:30 (CET)
Raw Materials for the Clean Energy Transition
Cleaner and greener energy brings with it an increased demand for critical raw materials and rare earth elements. Where could these be sourced, are there untapped deposits worth investigating within the EU, and how can we help by decarbonising an energy intensive industry? These are some of the questions that were undertaken in this session.

Webinar 3: Wednesday 18th November 2020 | 11:00-12:30 (CET)
Society and the environment in the raw materials agenda
Many regions across Europe have developed both socially and economically around the mineral resources they possess. This session delves into the challenges being faced by those regions and the solutions for future development, from re-skilling/up-skilling in a rapidly evolving sector, development of new technologies to reduce environmental impacts, to biodiversity protection strategies.
