Luleå University of Technology is Scandinavia’s northernmost University of Technology, based in Norrbotten County, Sweden. The university has four campuses located in the Arctic Region in the cities of Luleå, Kiruna, Skellefteå and Piteå, strategically located in one of Europe’s most important regions for mining, minerals and natural resources.
The university was originally established in 1971 under the name Luleå University College and had its first campus in the suburbs of Porsön in Luleå. A few years later it merged with the Teacher’s Training College of Luleå and the School of Music of Piteå. In 1997, the institution was granted full university status by the Swedish government and thereafter was renamed Luleå University of Technology. Today, LTU is nationally and internationally recognised as Sweden’s mining university and is home to the Swedish School of Mines, which integrates education, research and innovation across the minerals and metals value chain.
Luleå University of Technology has grown from strength to strength, with world-leading competence in natural resources, mining and materials science. Through the Centre for Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (CAMM) and CAMM-CRM, LTU leads research and education focused on the sustainable supply of critical raw materials, covering exploration, mining, processing, metallurgy, circularity and recycling, in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities.
