School of Life Sciences FHNW
The School of Life Sciences (HLS) was founded in 2006 as part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW. At the intersection of biology, medicine, natural sciences, environmental science and engineering, the School has a unique profile. State of the art infrastructure enables closing of the gap between cutting edge research and practical implementation. The HLS has ongoing activities on (bio)leaching of critical raw materials from secondary sources (incineration ashes, red mud). Our Infrastructure compasses equipment for the characterization of ores (XRD, XRF, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, etc.). We also possess dedicated lab infrastructure for the characterization of microorganisms involved in bioleaching (incl. next generation sequencing). Further, we possess different transportable pilot scale set ups such as membrane filtration / distillation, flocculation, liquid/liquid extraction and different (bio)reactors.
